Public Forum and Roundtable Discussion: Communicating Quaternary research to the public

Join us for a stimulating evening of discussions on Monday, July 28th 2003 on how to successfully communicate the best of our science to the general public.

Organized by Richard A. Diehl of the University of Alabama and Lawrence Strauss (Department of Anthropology, University of New Mexico), the evening will feature a panel of noted authors and journalists who have all been engaged in communication of science to a wide audience.

Panelists will include:

Jean Auel
Novelist, very successful author of Clan of the Cave Bear and her Earth's Children series, sold over 30 million books in 29 languages, all dealing with Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon peoples.
Sharon Begley, Science Columnist, The Wall Street Journal
Print media, science editor of Newsweek for many years and now The Wall Street Journal. Her many areas of interest include human origins and evolution.
Merry Bruns, Director of the Center for Anthropology and Science Communications, Washington DC (www.sciencesitescom.com/CASC)
A past archeologist who facilitates communication between science media and anthropology through workshops, academic sessions, and media relations. She's a Content Strategist for science and corporate web sites, and does worldwide training and speaking on web writing and editing, and communicating anthropology to the public.
Brian Fagan, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara
Book author, multi-media teaching. Fagan is an archaeologist who has authored a large number of very successful textbooks and books for the general public on archaeological topics, including his recent Floods, Famines and Emperors: El Niño and the Fate of Civilizations. He is also a pioneer in the development of large multi-media freshman archaeology courses at the University of California- Santa Barbara.
Bill Latka: President and Founder — Rivet Entertainment, Venice, CA
Television producer and director. Created highly rated docudrama, Before We Ruled the Earth, now airing on Discovery Channel.
John Pohl, Woodland Hills, CA
Archaeologist who is a specialist in ancient Mexico and who designs museum exhibits on Native North and Latin American cultures. He is also involved in the production of television programs dealing with American Indians.
Colin Tudge, Hook Norton, England
Book author. Tudge is a zoologist who writes books designed to present evolution to the public. His recent works include The Time Before history: 5 million Years of Human Impact and Neanderthals, Bandits and farmers: How Agriculture really Began. He has worked at the New Scientist and the BBC for long periods of time.
